Thanks for the reply.  Before I got your reply, I worked around .7 the
problem by  the Woody installer,
which worked fine.  Once I upgraded the kernel, I found that the
2.4.26 kernel had the same problem but the
2.6.7 kernel worked fine.  Perhaps it's the improved acpi support in
the 2.6.7 kernel.
