I would be satisfied to get LDAP working for this purpose. Get an error 81 
cannot communicate with server when I try to do anything.

Most recent KMail will access a "network" address book which can point to a 
file. Only one problem. Works great until one logs off and logs on and finds 
that file zeroed out!
