Does gnome override the xserver keyboard settings? > > Jeroen > Found the problem, somehow xfree86 was looking at some other configfile, because the settings in XF86Config-4 set by dpkg-reconfigure were not saved. After apt-get remove --purge xserver-xfree86 xserver-common and reinstalling apt-get install xserver-common xserver-xfree86 everythingg was fine again.
