I've never got their root_fs's working. I built my own using the guide at 
http://www.huckstep.uklinux.net/mle/uml-woody.html
and applying some of the suggestions from the article at
http://usermodelinux.org/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=27
(e.g. the sparse file one)
