I found the problem, finally. It turns out that this file: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTerm ...has a customization that ends up causing my XTerm*backarrowKey: true directive to be ignored. Specifically, "*backarrowKeyIsErase: true" is what was shooting me in the foot. I'll file a bug report. This will bite people.
