Get a *real* modem.  Real modems don't need drivers.  I strongly
suggest a modem that connects to your computer's RS232 port
externally, they Just Work(tm).  Aunt Tillie could even install an
external modem in Linux without help...
Bought an USRobotics External 56K Modem a few years back: best 
investment ever made. Is recognized immediately at all times.
