Thunderbird 0.8 and Filters

What's happened to filters in mozilla-thunderbird 0.8? The menu item 
Message->Create Filter from Message is ghosted (even when a message is 
selected) and running a filter from Tools->Run Filters on Folders isn't 
working (i.e. the messages aren't moved to individual folders.) Filters 
were working in previous Linux versions and works in the Mac OS X 
version of Thunderbird 0.8. Is there any solution -- other than 
downgrading mozilla-thunderbird? Thanks.
