If that's the case, then the new KDE / Gnome should "just work". What is leading you to believe that KDE / Gnome are not the current version? Also, post the output of "apt-cache policy kde" and "apt-cache policy gnome". You might also want to check out the individual packages they depend on, and their dependencies, until you get to app packages like konqueror or nautilus, because the meta-package versions don't always match their dependencies' versions.
