Yes, I agree. Installing from the net is always best. Start again, since you don't have much to lose. Just insert the 1st cd and when you get "boot:" you can either hit F3 to see a list of boot flavors or just type bf24 at "boot:" and you will boot and install the 2.4.x kernel.
