Hi there,
Someone very kindly posted the build instructions for 'non-destructive' install of X.org R6.8.0 this morning. There is a minor flaw in the instructions however.
When you copy the file xorgsite.def to host.conf, is should actually be copied to host.def instead. If following the instructions to the letter, and running make install (like I did about 20 minutes ago) you will overwrite large parts of your XFree86 install.
Fear not however, if you had copied and edited your xorg.conf file in /etc/X11 first, and then run ldconfig before starting X, X will still work (did for me, no guarantees that it will for you).
After figuring out what went wrong, I have started rebuilding X.org to install in /usr/local and also have the quick command to re-install XFree86 ready.
This command will give you all (or most of, anyway) your installed XFree86 packages in a simple cut-paste form. dpkg -l | grep 4.3.*dfsg | awk '{print $2}' | tr '\n' ' '
Feed the result to: apt-get --reinstall --download-only install
to download the packages, skip the --download-only to actually re-install the packages.
I may have missed something, commands may not work for you, they work for me however. As per usual, take a backup before tweaking your system... (I skipped that step, hence why I am now learning how to re-install large parts of my box...)
Rgds,
