You need to load the driver for your sound card. If you use Kernel 2.6, installing discover and/or hotplug can probably do that. You can also load it at boot time by adding the module name to /etc/modules. To do that, you have of course to find out which driver you need. Use lspci and a search engine to find out. If you want to use the alsa drivers, install the alsa-base package and run alsaconfig.
