if you do: apt-cache search matlab
you will see a list of math type programs.
scilab - Matrix-based scientific software package (a la Matlab and
Xmath)
octave - The GNU Octave language for numerical computations (2.1 branch)
r-base - GNU R statistical computing language and environment

are 3 popular ones.
