Check dmesg and look for framebuffer information. If you want to use it,
you probably need to tell your kernel which video mode to use. You also
need to add the fb driver to your initrd, if it is not compiled into
the kernel.

The installer does not know anything about the X configuration.
Debconf/dpkg-reconfigure asks for the mouse device when xerver-xfree86
or another xserver is installed. Can't you select /dev/gpmdata there?
