Note that the gid is set at this point, it's then available for use by all members of that group.
Took up the advice, and tried it (with the chmod change suggested by Thomas Adam) but to no avail :(
Even tried a slight variant
/dev/hdb1 /home/nil/redmond vfat users,uid=nil,umask=0002,iocharset=utf8 0 0
The man pages of fstab and mount tell me this should do the trick, but still am puzzled about the outcome
