I find Knoppix to be a great tool when a system is unbootable, and it's normally not a good idea (very bad) to run an fsck on a mounted partition.
If you can't fsck a mounted parition there is something seriously wrong with your software. My computers have been able to do that as far back as RHL 3.0.3.
It_must_ be mounted ro, and that's why you give the kernel the "ro" option as here:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/svn/anaconda$ cat /proc/cmdline
root=/dev/hda3 ro vga=791
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/svn/anaconda$
If it's true you have to boot something else to do a filesystem check, for sure there's something seriously amiss.
