You need to install or upgrade some packages to make it work. You at least need to install module-init-tools, because without is you won't be able to load any modules. Upgrading the tools for your file systems (e.g. reiserfprogs, e2fsprogs) and procps is also recommended. The rest depends on what features you want to use. For the new cryptoloop api you need updated mount and losetup programs, and maybe a newer lmsensors package. Check the Changes file in the kernel source Documentation directory for details.
