Try:

  xfontsel -pattern '-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--*-*-75-75-c-90-iso10646-1' &

Note the two "*" in the center.  That'll let xfontsel display all the
different sized fonts that otherwise match the pattern.  Once in
xfontsel, click on pxlsz and ptSz.

My guess is you're missing a font package (this is from stable):

ii  xfonts-75dpi-transcoded  4.2.1-3.woody3   75 dpi fonts for X (transcoded from ISO 
10646-1)
ii  xfonts-base-transcoded   4.2.1-3.woody3   standard fonts for X (transcoded from 
ISO 10646-1)
