That's not true. debian-installer will also allow for more than just the ncurses interface for the but-it-doesn't-have-a-GUI lusers, among other things. And hardware detection is getting better...
Definitely is.
Did an install with the Beta 3 a while back, and got auto detection of my external USB2 CD/RW Plexwriter 24/10/40U which would have been impossible a little while ago.
