After too much pain, I dselected cnews+suck and went with leafnode instead as suggested by Monique Y. Mudama (thanks!). I could just never overcome all the errors, and it wasn't worth the pain for the simple use I had in mind. Leafnode took some headscratching too, but I got news after about an hour of it.
