I know this is old, but since I did not see a final answer, I thought I would post so others could find the answer more easily. I was getting the same problem with compiling GAIM and it turned out to be that although gcc was installed, that gcc did not include c++ support. In Debian, I had to install the g++ package then all was ok. -- Thanks,
