Now, before committing suicide having important documents on my home dir,
what steps should I try to recover also part of the tar file?
Since gzip uses the same compression as zip, you might try Info-Zip's zipfix
program ON A COPY of the tarball (www.info-zip.org). As far as I can tell
it isn't packaged for Debian.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg --status zip Package: zip Status: install ok installed Priority: optional Section: utils Installed-Size: 184 Maintainer: Santiago Vila <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Version: 2.30-5 Replaces: zip-crypt (<= 2.30-2) Depends: libc6 (>= 2.1.2) Recommends: unzip Conflicts: zip-crypt (<= 2.30-2) Description: Archiver for .zip files This is InfoZIP's zip program. It produces files that are fully compatible with the popular PKZIP program; however, the command line options are not identical. In other words, the end result is the same, but the methods differ. :-) . This version supports encryption.
Not that I think it's got any chance of working, but I'd be vicariously pleased to hear otherwise.
