I was in the same situation up until last year. Couldn't print after installing Debian, and since I didn't need to print anything, I just didn't bother looking into it.
Finally had to print something last year, and really didn't look forward to it (remembering of hard it was to set up lpr). Installed Cups, and all possible printer drivers, went to the Cups configpage, and picked the printer driver from a pulldown menu, printer from the device, and all was fine. Even managed to set up the printer as a network printer, which I've never done before... -- John L.
