If the dd fails maybe:
mount /dev/dvd
df
get the # of1k blocks in the device. Div by 2 to get # of sectors.
readcd dev=x,y,z f=your.iso sectors=0-# of sectors.

where x,y,z is what cdrecord -scanbus reports. If the dvd device is not
recognised by cdrecord dd might work.
