Can anyone recommend a backup program which can write to DVD?
tar cvzf <archive>.tar.gz <files>
burn this to DVD, optionally using "split" if the file is too large for a single DVD.
I'd like to backup my entire deb installation (4-5 GB) and be able to snap it back into place from DVD. I last used Mondobackup, but it only does CDs AFAIK, and that can take ages on CDRWs at 10-speed. Norton Ghost 2003 fails backing up Linux for me :-(
Instead of Norton Ghost, try partimage. You can boot from a knoppix CD to make this doubly convenient. The joy of knoppix is it sets up all your networking so that you can copy the image to a mounted network share. This makes frigging with DOS boot disks seem so obviously like the anachnonism that it is.
