It just means that gnome has sounds that it tries to play on certain events, similar to the way Windows does. So, to be able to play those sounds, it looks for /dev/dsp - the audio device. If there's not a checkbox to tell it not to display the warning any more, try opening the Gnome control center (gnome-control-center from the command line, I believe) and there should be an option in there to disable all sound events in Gnome.
