Ooops gdm just took over...

I was playing around because I wanted to get gnome installed and did not 
know how, so I did:

apt-get intall gdm
Now I can't get into my system.  Every time that I log in as a user, it 
just kicks me right back to the login screen.  How do I remove gdm and 
get back to normal.  I'm guessing I'll have to boot with CD #1, but 
don't know where to go from there.
