There are unofficial debian packages available for mplayer. Look here (and
follow dpkg's loving advice):

<dpkg> | add deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ stable main to your
sources.list. Change stable to testing or unstable according to 
         the distribution you are using. "deb
ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ stable main".

Then "apt-get install mplayer". (apt-cache search mplayer) -- that has a
GUI component to it, IIRC.
