I have 256MB currently. I have more that I can put in if this is a
possible cause.

I will try lnx-bbc and see what happens...

Lockups of this kind usually indicate hardware issues, and I suspect in
your case it is through lack of RAM? How much physical RAM have you got?
Indeed, I cannot recommend enough that you get a rescue CD such as
lnx-bbc, and run memtest86 from it for 24 hours, if you can.
