congrats you found a (unknown options) bug in ntp-simple if it's
supposed to replace xntpd

guess one other questions should have been are you running xntpd or
some other clone :-0

almost replaces :-)

things running out of cron seems to defeat xntp function/features
which is a standalone daemon ...

if you are gonna run time services from cron, you can do that
almost hundred different ways ( well couple dozen )
