I'm going to be loading Debian on some desktops that are going to be networked with some machines running a different distribution. I'm noting that the initial userid / groupid on the distributions differ. I need to have them match the other machines for sharing purposes; I haven't been able to talk the client into running NIS.
The userids aren't a problem - I can set those as we create the users. The group ids - especially "users" - are an issue as they are created during installation.
Is there a way to set the groupid for the initially created groups? I could live with just specifying the id for users, but it would be nice to have a bit more control.
Is it possible during Debian installation to specify the minimum id for both users and groups to have them match the other distributions being used?

I am in a similar situation, dealing with Debian and Fedora. Fedora starts users's GID's from 500 I believe and Debian from 1000. To make users have the same GUID, I just re-made the Fedora users with explicitly specifying their gid as desired (making them same as their GIDs in Debian).
Sorry, I know this is not automatic and sophisticated, but at least it worked. I recall I looked for information on how to initialize the GID's starting value during installation, but could not find anything. What I discovered was that different distros have their own policy on this and do not let customize the starting value. However, if you find a way to do it, I would very interested to know.
I just wish there was *one* standard initial GID assigning policy in Linux ... sigh.
