The ~/.xsession file is never called.
Try .xinitrc; GDM (generally!) uses this. startx (what I use) prefers .xsession (generally!). I've never figured out why I need those "(generally!)"s in there; I just know others do it my way, and it's reversed for them. -- Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced.
