Sorry, I didn't follow this issue. So if this has already been tried excuse the duplication: If you are using KDE (which it sounds like) go into artsd config in the KDE Control Panel and disable Duplex operation (or something very close to that name) Personally, I'd try to get it working as a regular user, period.
