Assuming you have a graphical login:

   /etc/init.d/kdm stop

Depending on what you have installed, that "kdm" might instead be
"xdm", "gdm", or "wdm".  If, on the other hand, you start X with
"startx" at the command line:

   <CTRL><ALT><BackSpace>

will _kill_ the X server.
