Are you a member of the group "scanner"?
When the scanner is being plugged in, a device is created with root:root as its owner, hence only root can use the scanner.
libusbscanner changes these attributes to root:scanner (rw-rw----).
But in order to take advantage of it, you must be member of the group "scanner".
