Not sure what you mean by this. Are you using tasksel, dselect or aptitude to install packages? Or maybe you are just doing apt-get install package? I would suggest you use aptitude. If you wan't to change your sources list to upgrade to sarge or sid for example then you would edit it with a text editor such as vim, pico or nano (depending on what you have installed). Anyway it sounds as though you need to become more familiar with Debian before attempting an upgrade. However, some of the packages in woody are quite old (a new release is on its way) but you can download KDE 3. by using backports.
