The problem why I did that was that it tried to install several schema stuff directly into /etc instead of debian/firestarter/etc, which of course does not work since every deb is/should _not_ be built with root rights (we use fakeroot) and should not touch the real /etc anyhow.... Since the .spec of firestarter does the same and I don't see the files it wanted to install in the %files section I was quite sure this was what I have to do Doesn't look like it, though...
