In case of SIS graphics trouble go to http://www.winischhofer.net
As far as that behaviour goes:
I don't have a laptop but a still a cheap sis and if it is configured
wrong there will be nothing gui - no login manager or anything at all
but a black screen or some nice stripes. If you get a login manager and
can't get kde to work you might want to look into other sources for that
problem.
