tried modconf
got modules screen with no modules to select ???

went to
/lib/modules/2.4.18-bf2.4/kernel/drives

there are several driver sub directories, block etc etc
but no cdrom directory.

Does debian auto scan the hardware, not having recognised my cdrom, 
does not load the driver ??
