I had a similar problem a few weeks ago while I was helping a chap to
configure X11 on his RedHat machine. The problem in that case was a
missing libdb library.
In the light of that experience I would first try apt-get -f install
- but you probably already have done that ...
Search google for ["respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes"
mgetty]. Maybe you will find some of those answers helpful.
