I had this issue a week ago and a friend on irc kindly told me about xwd.
The easiest way of doing it is to run the command:

xwd > /path/filename.xwd

Then go and open that .xwd file with the gimp:

gimp /path/filename.xwd &

Edit as appropriate (canvas size etc)

then select file > save as and save it as a .jpeg (works best for me)

If a .jpeg file image is what I want all is fine.  If not i'll use a program
called xnview (freely available from www.xnview.com) to convert the image.
