as someone has already said, there are not linux tools to create and/or
resize a ntfs partition. Moreover, it has been said as well that you should
make a general backup of the data you can to keep. Just in case.

I had the same problem and reading the debian installation guide, they tell
(not very clearly, maybe) you that you can resize the original partition. I
just resized the ntfs partition to 3Gb (in a 30 gb hd) using
the windows intallation cd (you have to choose to install windows and before
the installation you should resize de hard drive); once you make space for
debian, insert the debian installation cd and create your linux partition in
the free space of your hd.

Before finishing the partition, tell your boot manager  (e.g., lilo) to let
you choose which OS you want to boot.
