Paul,

What kernel version are you using? Does your old kernel still work?
Anything in /var/logs/syslog when you are waiting after the ifup?

It sounds like your dhcp client is hosed, unless your old kernel no
longer gets an IP (which might mean the server is hosed). So, I guess
the first thing you need to tell us is if the old kernel works? Also,
I'm not sure about this, but you might need af_packet (the packet
filter) in the kernel...some one hit me if I'm wrong about this.

Perhaps you could try to set a static IP and see if the box comes up?
Are you on a private LAN?
