Try .Xsession (capital X).  It works for me.

From a terminal, run "killall <currentwm> && sleep 1 && <new-wm>".  Make
sure to save the session after that (from the Control Center -> Advanced
-> Sessions, then either check the "Automatically save changes to
session" box).
