Are you sure that they actually loose contact? 

It sounds more like X hanging to me... Does hitting 'caps lock' switch
on/off the LEDs? Or is anything moving on screen (e.g. animated mail
checker, mp3 player, gkrellm etc) to indicate that it's alive?

No other PC at all? If you do, you can always use a null-modem cable and
put a getty on the serial port. [ On my laptop I can log in through the
infrared port if things go really really bad... ]
