Debian 2.2 is the old stable version - you should consider upgrading to
3.0. (NOTE: not strictly necessary. However, xawtv has improved quite a
bit).

Your problem is probably that the kernel driver for your tv card is not
compiled - you'll need to comile a new kernel (I'm assuming you know how
to do that - if not, there are hundreds of pages describing that on the
net). In the kernel configuration, 'multimedia support', then
'video4linux', there chose the right driver.

Wrong. xawtv uses video4linux, which is the generic kernel interface to
TV/video hardware. (But nate already said that).
