Subscribe to the debian security announce mailing list. Very low volume. When you get an advisory from them that should wake you up that you should run 'apt-get update && apt-get upgrade'. The advisory may be on something you have not installed and so nothing will be upgraded at that moment. But it is a good practice to use to ensure that when there are updates you will get them. Bob
