To those who replied .Many Thanks,you stirred the mud betwwen my ears:-))
The attachment was telling mutt it was an 'application octet-stream'.
Adding a line
application/octet-stream; /usr/bin/acroread '%s' etc etc
in /etc/mailcap worked fine
