problemas al instalr nuevo kernel

Hola, tenia instalado un kernel 2.2.20 idepci y para tener soporte para el mouse USB ya que si no, no podia iniciar las x ni kde me baje un 2.4.18 de debian y siguiendo las instrucciones lo he configurado leendome toda la ayuda de cada apartado y siguiendo las recomendaciones que me daban, despues lo he compilado y todo ha funcionado perfecto..ahora tengo los dos en lilo y escogo uno u otro. Lo unico que pasa es que con el kernel nuevo no funciona la red...yo tengo un router 3Com.
