Pon todos los Modes así:

Y cargará los que soporte tu hard para cada profundidad.
Y metele un display de 32:

Si te falla, dejas el DefaultDepth a 24 y palante.
Yo arranco las X así:
startx -- -depth 24 2> /dev/tty12 &
Y me va de cine :-)
