Si tenes cargado el modulo "vesa", creo que no se puede obtener mas de "1024x768"; otra opcion que yo he probado a sido disminuir la profundidad de color; otra mas, es hacer como root: X-Configure y probar el archivo xorg.conf que te deja en root home; la ultima que yo conozco es, tomar un archivo viejo xorg.conf o el de xf86 y hacer pruebas.
